Can Dandruff Cause Hair Loss?

Share:

SMP vs hair transplant

Dandruff is a very common symptom to a variety of scalp and hair problems that many people deal with on a daily basis. The term dandruff refers to the dry and itchy flakes of skin that develop on the scalp, and are often seen falling onto the shoulders and other articles of clothing when you go to itch your head.

Dandruff itself does not cause hair loss. As said before, it is merely a symptom of other issues you might be dealing with, it is not a specific diagnosis. However, dandruff can be a tell-tale sign of other conditions, which in turn might lead to hair loss. First and foremost, a person with dandruff generally resorts to itching their scalp and hair. Doing so repeatedly, for too long, and with too much pressure, can significantly injure their scalp and hair. This, along with any inflammation and other effects you may experience from a variety of conditions, is what will lead to the thinning, lack of growth, and loss of hair.

So What Causes Dandruff?

There are a variety of factors that could lead to a person having dandruff. The most common causes are generally dry skin, diet, stress, and even some shampoos and hair products. If this is the case, it is usually pretty easy to resolve your dandruff problem. However, there are some medical conditions that can also lead to dandruff and less-healthy hair. This includes seborrheic dermatitis, eczema, scalp psoriasis, or fungal infections like scalp ringworm. These kinds of conditions can cause skin flakiness, or for the skin to shed at a very quick rate, which would in turn cause dandruff. If you suspect you may be dealing with any of these conditions, it is important to seek treatment as quickly as possible, as they can cause damage to the scalp and lead to hair loss.

Preventing Dandruff and Related Hair Loss

Sometimes, even after successfully treating it, dandruff can just happen. But there are still valid ways to prevent it, and to keep your head of hair healthy. Try some of these if you are dealing with dandruff:

  • Regularly shampoo your hair. Infrequent washing may lead to dandruff.
  • Try Anti-Dandruff shampoo. Carefully read the instructions so that you are treating it properly.
  • Try to avoid aggressively itching and massaging the scalp and forcefully brushing and twisting the hair.
  • Avoid super tight hairstyles. These styles can weaken hair follicles, break the hair and slow growth.
  • Don’t delay treatment. Try a proper shampoo at the first sign of dandruff, and if the problem persists, seek medical advice quickly.
